The story of the M62 locomotive known in Hungary as "Szergej" began in the year 1965 with the delivery of the first locomotive of its kind in the world from Lugansk. (M62 001). Another 288 locomotives were then delivered to MAV, 15 of these in broad-gauge versions.
These locomotives hauled heavy freight transport and thus heralded in an early end of service for the older steam locomotives. Some of these robust engines are still in service today. The M62 127 with its retro paintwork is particularly popular with railway enthusiasts.
