Electrotren rail-car model.
The RENFE 596 series consists of 25 diesel railcars rebuilt from the two power cars with cab of a 593 series railcar.
The reconstruction work was carried out at the MIT in Valladolid, where a new cab was installed at the non-cab end, a new, more comfortable and more open-plan interior was fitted out and the transmission and diesel engine control system was improved. These railcars are used on lines with low traffic and low occupancy on Regional and Regional Express services. Currently the services that these units run are Murcia-Cartagena, Zaragoza-Huesca-Canfranc and Vigo-Valença do Minho. They are also used as back-up on the Vigo-Pontevedra service.
